Mission

Description

The mission of the General and Foregut Surgery Committee is to develop evidence-based guidelines and identify unique diagnostic and treatment strategies required for the management of general surgical and foregut disease in patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgical procedures.

Objectives

  • Increase awareness of the incidence of common general surgical and foregut problems in patients before and after metabolic and bariatric surgery
  • Establish and disseminate guidelines an protocols for the management of general surgical and foregut problems before and after metabolic and bariatric surgery

Committee Goals

Short-Term

  1. Increase committee membership and participation
  2. Complete the Be Wise social marketing campaign
  3. Publish:
    a. Gastroparesis: An Evidence-Based Review for the Bariatric and Foregut Surgeon
    b. A Foregut Survey on the Scope of Practice Among Members of American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery
    c. Systematic Review of Management of Gallbladder Disease in Patients After Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery
Specific Projects that Achieve Goals and Objectives
  1. Several new committee members were welcomed this year
  2. The committee is collaborating with the Public Education Committee and an outside vendor to produce social marketing campaigns featuring the most common comorbidities: diabetes, sleep apnea, NAFLD, gastroparesis, hiatal hernia, heartburn
  3. The manuscripts above are in near final or final publication stage

Mid-Term

  1. Disseminate the Be Wise videos to membership
  2. Begin new projects upon approval of project proposals

  1. Collabroate with the Communications and Public Education Committees on a plan to market the videos to members and on different platforms
