Exciting opportunity for a Psychologist to join our multidisciplinary team of surgeons, APRNs, nurses, and dietitians with a focus on the bariatric patient population. Middlesex Health Mental Health Services is an APA-accredited internship site dedicated to recruiting and training talented doctoral candidates. This person will work as part of the psychology team helping to mentor and educate future psychologists. Responsibilities would include bariatric evaluations, individual and group therapy, supervision of psychology students, psychological/neuropsychological testing, collaboration with multidisciplinary team members (including external partners), and other job-related duties.

Clinical Health Psychology Fellowship – Bariatric Program

The Clinical Health Psychology Fellowship offers both breadth and depth in health psychology training. Fellows choose a specialty area (“major rotation”) in which they focus the majority of their clinical and research work. The Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery major rotation includes evaluation and treatment of patients with medically complicated obesity in a cutting edge, multidisciplinary obesity and bariatric surgery program. Bariatrician/Obesity Medicine Specialist

Central Virginia VA Healthcare System, Richmond, VA

The Bariatric Surgery Program at the Richmond VA Medical Center is growing rapidly. We provide a centralized, multi-disciplinary team approach to the surgical treatment of obesity which includes surgeons, bariatricians, advance practice providers, registered dietitians, psychologists, registered nurses, and many other specialties.

The Bariatrician/Obesity Medicine Specialist will be responsible for evaluating pre-operative patients and assisting in the optimization of comorbid conditions. The physician will also evaluate pre- and post-operative Bariatric Surgery patients who may benefit from anti-obesity medications and prescribes these medications, if appropriate, based on the treatment plan.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  2. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree (MD or DO).
  3. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  4. The physician must be board certified or meet qualifications for board eligibility in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine.
  5. Previous experience (within the past 3 years) working in the field of Obesity Medicine or Bariatric Surgery is required.
  6. Certification by the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) is preferred.
  7. Previous experience (within the past 3 years) working as part of a multi-disciplinary team is preferred.

PAY AND BENEFITS:

Pay: Competitive salary- $220,000 – $260,000 per year, based on education and experience. In addition, physicians are eligible for an annual performance bonus and regular salary increases.

Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME).

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA.

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).

CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification).

Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided.

  • Teaches informational classes, of which may at times be outside of traditional clinic hours.
  • Helps coordinate the bariatric support group classes. Moderates private online support group(s).
  • Provides nutrition education counseling utilizing techniques that consider the varied needs bariatric populations as well as cultural, religious, and ethnic concerns.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with the patient’s referring physician and other health care providers to ensure continuity of care.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of accredited dietetic program in university or college, with completion of accredited dietetic internship required.
  • Two (2) years recent experience as clinical dietitian and outpatient counseling dietitian in a hospital preferred.

The successful PA will focus on the patient’s overall health in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to perform various pre-and post-op care to identify the health impact of obesity on patients, and coordinate measures to reduce problems and address the root cause. You will support the complete assessment, admission, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up evaluation of patients, including initial patient work-up to determine care based on medical history, physical exams, inpatient consults, and lab work. You’ll also participate in patient education/counseling on proper eating habits, exercise/fitness, behavior modification and other aspects of their weight loss; therapeutic and preventive health care services; performance improvement, research, and managing all related clinical paperwork.

The right candidate will have:

  • Graduated from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) program or similar approved program
  • A minimum of 1-2 years of bariatric experience
  • Current NYS PA License and National Commission on PA Certification

This 12 month appointment (beginning Sept 2024) located in the Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital and Sugarhouse Health Center offers behavioral medicine training with a specialty focus in bariatric and weight management psychology. Fellows will focus their major rotation in evaluations and psychotherapy with patients seeking bariatric surgery and non-surgical weight management in collaboration with dietitians, exercise physiologists, endocrinologists, surgeons, and other experienced providers through the Comprehensive Weight Management Program to provide patients with comprehensive interdisciplinary care. Minor rotation opportunities include inpatient and outpatient rehab psychology (patients with spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, amputation), and chronic pain (including spinal cord stimulator evaluations). This postdoctoral fellowship includes 80% clinical time and 20% time focused on research, didactics, and supervision. Research opportunities are plentiful with a large and growing clinical research database on over 2000 patients who have undergone bariatric surgery, as well as active ongoing data collection on pilot funded projects.
