Mission

  • To improve the care and treatment of people with obesity and related diseases
  • To be the recognized authority and resource on metabolic and bariatric surgery
  • To advance the science and understanding of metabolic and bariatric surgery

Description

The Clinical Issues Committee creates evidence-based guidelines and position statements regarding clinical issues to enhance quality in metabolic and bariatric surgery patient care and to support ASMBS member practices. The Committee also performs systematic review of existing statement and guidelines, researches the current data, and makes appropriate updates and revisions as evidence becomes available. The committee is also charged with developing time-sensitive statements or recommendations related to new developments in the field of bariatric surgery.

Objectives

  • Identify existing and emerging gaps in guidelines/position statements
  • Increase understanding of clinical issues
  • Establish and disseminate standards and protocols
  • Establish timeline based on relative clinical importance of issues

Committee Goals

Short-Term

  1. 2023-2024 Call for Statements from Membership; identify CIC priorities
  2. Publish 2022-2023 statements/updates/literature reviews in SOARD
  3. Streamline the publication process
  4. Increase CIC Member engagement

Mid-Term

  1. Update of Credentialing Guidelines in Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery
  2. Sleep Apnea Statement
  3. Perioperative Rehabilitation and Exercise Guidelines

Long-Term

  1. Ongoing identification of issues to develop statements and provide topics for EC Review
  2. Provide ongoing clarity on issues related to bariatric and metabolic surgery
  3. Ongoing review/revision of all existing and new statements

Specific Projects that Achieve Goals and Objectives

Short-Term:

  1. Call for Statements from Membership sent out in January 2022 and 2023; 2023 CIC priorities and writing topics were approved and writing groups will be formed to complete the following:
    • Ulcerative Complications after MBS
    • Endoscopic Bariatric Procedures
    • Enhanced Recovery After Bariatric Surgery
    • Measures of Obesity
    • Revisional Bariatric Surgery
  2. Publish the following statements/updates/literature reviews in SOARD:
    a. 2022 ASMBS and IFSO: Indications for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery
    b. Literature Review on Antiobesity Medication Use for MBS Patients
    c. Literature Review on Internal Hernia After Bariatric Surgery and Management of Mesenteric Defects
    d. Literature Review on the Effect of Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Limb Lengths on Outcomes
    e. Statement on Bariatric Emergencies for the General Surgeon
    f. Statement on One-anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB) & Updated OAGB Literature Review
    g. 2022 Review in advanced stage of preparation: Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) and its Role in the Treatment of Obesity: A Systematic Review (utilizing the Merritt Trial)
    h. 2022 Statement in review with ECEC: i. Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery for Beneficiaries of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) with a Review of the Literature
  3. Developed, enhanced and maintained the CIC Statement Development Process and submission letters to the SOARD Editor
  4. Committee Member Participation: 91% active writing and 99% active writing or reviewing

  1. CIC members assigned to Joint Task Force with Bariatric Surgery Training Committee (Lead); in progress
